Mercer University invites applications for the position of Dean of the Townsend School of Music. The successful candidate will be an experienced and visionary leader and will oversee strategic planning, recruitment and faculty development. The Dean will also have oversight of the programmatic, fund-raising, and management operations of the School and will report to the Provost.
Located in Macon, Georgia, a vibrant metro area approaching a population of 250,000 and located 80 miles south of Atlanta, the Townsend School of Music is a comprehensive school offering undergraduate degrees in music education, performance, music with elective studies, and a BA in music, as well as graduate degrees in performance, collaborative piano, instrumental and choral conducting and church music. The School has an enrollment of 100 undergraduate and graduate students with 15 full-time faculty and 25 adjuncts.
Housed in the beautiful, state-of-the-art McCorkle Music Building, the school seeks to develop the whole musician through the integration of theory, practice and performance. Partnering with community music organizations, the School has working relationships with principal members of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra to form the Macon-Mercer Symphony Orchestra, WMUM (Georgia Public Broadcasting’s Middle Georgia affiliate) and the Central Georgia Opera Guild. A full schedule of student, faculty, guest artist and ensemble concert events are held at the University’s major performance venues: Neva Langley Fickling Hall, Newton Chapel and the Grand Opera House. The Townsend School of Music also hosts two centers for specialized study: the Robert McDuffie Center for Strings, housed in the historic Bell House on College Street, and the Townsend-McAfee Institute for Graduate Church Music Studies.
Qualifications for this position include an earned doctorate in a related field from an accredited college university and a record of outstanding teaching and scholarship/performance that qualifies the candidate for a tenured professorship. The successful candidate will demonstrate exemplary collaborative leadership skills, integrity, and commitment to academic excellence and superior musicianship.
