The Journalism and Media Studies Department (JMS) invites applicants for a tenure-track faculty position in critical media studies. Rank will be determined based on the credentials of the final candidate. The new faculty member will be responsible for teaching courses in media and film analysis, theory, and style in the Media Studies and Film Studies programs. They should also be able to develop and teach courses in their area of study. The faculty member should contribute to a diverse and inclusive learning environment within the department and across the university. This is a nine-month, tenure track position with a teaching load of 21 semester credit hours and an expectation of peer-reviewed scholarship or creative activities. Service requirements may include student advising, committee work, community engagement, and active commitment to developing the undergraduate program. Opportunities exist to provide departmental and program leadership in the future.


At a minimum, a candidate should have:

  • Earned doctorate in media studies, film studies, or a related field from an accredited college/university by the time of initial appointment; ABD candidates will be considered at the instructor rank until PhD is received.
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching;
  • Experience in teaching courses in media and/or film studies;
  • Demonstrated commitment to peer-reviewed scholarship;
  • Dedication to program building and community engagement;
  • Experience with and/or interest in teaching, advising, and mentoring minority and underrepresented students, and contributing to a diverse, equitable, and inclusive academic environment.

The preferred candidate will have expertise in media and/or film studies and one or more the following areas: Global film and/or media; Non-Western media, creators, industries, and/or cultures; Transnational media and/or film; Postcolonial theory; Film and media genres; Digital and new media.
