The Center for Collaborative Journalism is seeking a journalist for a civic journalism fellowship. The applicant will be responsible for enterprise and investigative reporting with a specific focus on education, health and public safety as well as news literacy outreach. The position will report on local government agencies and create content for CCJ, its media partners and other community organizations. This position also involves relaunching and managing a civic engagement program focused on educating citizens in basic news literacy, journalistic ethics and information gathering.
The Center is a unique community media collaborative combining Mercer’s liberal arts-based journalism and media studies program with the professional expertise of The Telegraph, Georgia’s third-largest daily newspaper, Georgia Public Broadcasting, the third-largest public broadcaster in the country based on population reach, and 13WMAZ, the most-watched television station in central Georgia. The Center also manages Mercer’s low-power, non-commercial TV station WMUB.
Mercer University is one of America’s oldest and most distinctive institutions of higher learning, offering rigorous programs to more than 8,600 students enrolled in 12 schools and colleges. The academic cornerstone of the university, the College of Liberal Arts, is a highly selective, residential institution enrolling over 1,800 students. Recognized with a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, the College of Liberal Arts at Mercer University is located in historic Macon, Georgia, which is about an hour south of Atlanta.
A bachelor's degree in journalism or related media communications field from an accredited college/university and at least five years of reporting experience in a professional newsroom are required. Experience in multimedia storytelling and working with students is strongly preferred. Candidates should have experience using technology -- including computer-assisted reporting, DSLRS, audio equipment, mobile video, and other multimedia storytelling tools. Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud tools is also preferred. Candidates should have strong storytelling skills as well as excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
