The Mercer University School of Medicine (MUSM) Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences seeks a new faculty member to join our Master of Family Therapy (MFT) Program (Medical Educator Track) on the Atlanta campus. The MFT program is a deeply rooted, integral part of MUSM and the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. For over thirty years, the MFT program has focused on training both MFT and medical students to fulfill MUSM’s mission of preparing healthcare professionals to meet the primary care and health care needs of rural and underserved Georgia residents. The MFT Program seeks to transform students into competent, compassionate and ethical professionals who work collaboratively to meet the needs of individuals, couples, families and communities. Emphasizing interactive and problem-based teaching strategies, our student-centered faculty provides a conceptual and practical foundation that equips graduates to be discerning consumers and innovative producers of knowledge across a variety of medical and other clinical settings, as well as academic institutions. This foundation prepares clinicians to articulate and utilize a wide variety of philosophical perspectives, theoretical orientations, and clinical modalities, all with inclusion of diverse contextual factors and social experiences that impact therapist and client systems, as well as institutions and communities in which they participate. Through scholarship and clinical outreach, students and faculty work closely to have local, regional, national, and international impact.
The MFT Program is administered on two campuses - Macon and Atlanta. The Macon program is located close to the main MUSM campus and is adjacent to Navicent Health, a Level I Trauma Center serving 28 counties in middle Georgia. The Atlanta program is located on the campus of Piedmont Hospital, a 488-bed acute tertiary care facility specializing in heart health, transplant services and cancer care in the North Atlanta community of Buckhead.
Responsibilities of the position are:
- to teach MFT courses.
- to serve as a clinical supervisor to MFT students.
- to contribute to the day to day functioning of the Mercer Family Therapy Center.
- to contribute to governance of the Mercer MFT program by participating in regular faculty meetings, student admissions decisions, curriculum reviews, clinical evaluations of students, and/or special committees as needed (i.e., faculty/staff hiring interviews).
- to engage in one or more of the four types of scholarship: (A) investigative research (including quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods and program evaluation), (B) interdisciplinary integration, (C) application of theory/research/practice feedback loop, and/or (D) transformation of teaching practices.
- to serve as a student-centered academic and professional development advisor and mentor to students.
- to serve as a role model for professional development through his or her active participation in MFT and/or interdisciplinary professional organizations.
- to serve as a role-model for interdisciplinary collaborative partnerships through service to the university and community.
- to provide direct client services through Mercer Medicine, the group practice of Mercer School of Medicine.
