Responsibilities

Under direct supervision of the Director of International Programs, the Study Abroad Programs Coordinator is first and foremost responsible for all aspects of managing the study abroad process for students seeking an independent study abroad experience, including: communicating with partner institutions and affiliate program providers; advocating for changes in program delivery; organizing recruiting events to encourage student to study abroad and to inform students and parents about study abroad opportunities; and overcoming obstacles to studying abroad and the benefits of studying abroad. The Coordinator is also responsible for managing academic credit transfer, student participation data, and reporting on student success and program challenges. The Coordinator works with various University departments to ensure proper student registration/enrollment at Mercer, the appropriate and timely approval for and assignment of study abroad credit (Mercer or transfer), appropriate program budgeting, and the application of study abroad fees. The Coordinator maintains written and/or verbal communication with student participants while they are abroad and assists with problem-solving in extreme cases. The Coordinator works collaboratively with other International Programs staff to prepare information pertaining to new programs for use in print and electronic media, including the website, and supports the department’s needs in hosting and attending promotional events. The Study Abroad Programs Coordinator also serves as Mercer University's primary contact for the Gilman Scholarship program. Additionally, the Study Abroad Programs Coordinator advises all Pell-Eligible Mercer University students interested in studying abroad on the application process, and ensures that student applications are complete and submitted on time.  Additionally, the Coordinator assists students with any necessary scholarship award deferrals or programmatic change reporting.

Required Qualifications

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university is required along with two years of directly related experience, to include academic advising and event planning experience.  Candidates with bachelor's and/or master's in global studies, foreign languages, international studies, cultural studies, sociology, anthropology, psychology, or other fields associated with cultural learning and human development, or marketing or graphic design in combination with extensive time abroad are highly desirable.

The successful candidate must have the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

• Ability to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences
• Ability to memorize facts and relay information quickly and accurately, or quickly conduct research
• Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize but remain flexible
• Problem-solving skills and can work through systemic issues at a university
• Knows how to effectively use technology. Knows how to use Microsoft Office, and maintain office files and budget/expense reports. Is able to utilize social networks (i.e., Facebook) to effectively communicate with students and promote new programs
• Ability to update content on website
