Responsibilities

The Assistant Dean for Student Affairs manages a variety of responsibilities. He or she reports directly to the Dean of the Law School and has initial responsibility for all issues directly related to student success and wellness. The Assistant Dean counsels students individually and works closely with student leaders and with law student organizations to ensure that extracurricular activities help students in their personal and professional development. The Assistant Dean is responsible for understanding relevant laws and regulations that affect law students. He or she interacts with external constituents, such as the Georgia Board of Bar Examiners on matters related to students and their fitness to sit for the bar examination. The Assistant Dean is a member of the Dean’s Senior Staff and works closely with other faculty and staff to ensure student success and an atmosphere of diversity and inclusion within the law school. The Assistant Dean is frequently present at weekend or evening events involving law students.

Required Qualifications
A JD degree from an accredited college/university is required, along with a minimum of five years of experience in law practice, law teaching or graduate student professional services experience. A license to practice law is also required. The successful candidate must have an understanding of relevant laws affecting students and the need to refer issues to appropriate University officials. The incumbent must be able to work collaboratively with administrators across the University as well as excellent communication skills, both written and oral. The Assistant Dean of Student Affairs writes letters and memoranda to employers, faculty, administration and others. He or she speaks to groups publicly, and addresses many small groups weekly. This position also requires excellent problem solving skills and mediation skills, patience, mature judgment, the ability to maintain confidentiality, and the ability to assist students in crisis situations. The Assistant Dean deals with a variety of sensitive situations and with a wide range of persons, diverse backgrounds, and life experiences.
