Responsibilities

The Counseling and Psychological Services office is searching for two Staff Counselors.  The Staff Counselor at CAPS works as a member of a collaborative team providing direct clinical services, crisis management and outreach programming to enrolled Mercer University students.


Essential responsibilities:
• Provide individual and relational therapy to Mercer University undergraduate and graduate students
• Rotates 24 hour on-call/crisis management with other CAPS staff and responds to the students as needed
• Facilitates outreach programming and psycho-education to the Mercer community
• Participates in the training of CAPS interns and other Mercer constituents
• Provides consultation to the Mercer community
• Participates in related Student Affairs and university committees
• Maintains all relevant ethical, legal and professional standards of practice for licensed Psychologist, Licensed Professional Counselor, Licensed Social Worker, or Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist in the State of Georgia

Required Qualifications

A master’s degree from an accredited college/university in marriage and family counseling, professional counselor, social work, OR PhD or PsyD in psychology is required, along with at least one year of post graduate degree experience in a university/college counseling center or counseling services agency.  Additionally, candidates must be licensed as a Licensed Psychologist, LPC, LMFT or LCSW in the State of Georgia or relevant Associate License (LAPC/LAMFT/LMSW) and full license in the State of Georgia within two years of start date.  

The ability to be on campus within 20 minutes of receiving a call to facilitate on-call crisis management is highly desirable. Candidates with experience with outreach programming including suicide awareness are highly desirable for one of the positions, and candidates with specialization in men's issues and/or diversity issues are highly desirable for the other position. 

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

-Able to provide individual,group and relational counseling to diverse constituencies on a university campus
-Ability to establish rapport quickly with clients within a therapeutic context
-Ability to provide crisis intervention to assist students
-Ability to create and execute psycho-educational programs on various levels to the university campus
-Excellent judgment, problem solving, sophistication in thought, and good knowledge of the myriad of factors leading to the resolution of psychological problems
-Critical thinking, organizational skills and attention to detail
-Good verbal and written communication skills
-Sensitive to & supportive of cultural diversity issues
