The Mercer University School of Engineering (MUSE) invites applications for a tenure-track, Assistant/Associate Professor position in Civil Engineering, starting August 2019.  Civil Engineering is a new specialty at Mercer, which will leverage faculty and laboratories in our existing Environmental Engineering program.  Candidates with expertise and scholarly interests in areas related to traffic flow theory/simulation/control, application of big data analysis, intelligent transportation systems, connected and autonomous vehicles, highway design and traffic operations, and sustainable transportation systems are of particular interest. Priority will be given to motivated individuals who could help launch the new BSE program, as well as spearhead future efforts to build a strong graduate program.  Mercer Engineering uses a core curriculum model and we would expect this faculty member to teach fundamental engineering courses such as introduction to freshmen design and senior design capstone, among others. The ideal candidate should also have the ability to support Mercer University’s signature Mercer on Mission Program (

Mercer’s undergraduate engineering program is ABET/EAC accredited under “General Engineering.”  The School of Engineering offers both Bachelor and Master of Science in Engineering degrees with specializations in biomedical, civil, computer, electrical, environmental, industrial, and mechanical; engineering related Bachelor of Science degrees in technical communications and industrial management; and an undergraduate minor and graduate concentration in engineering for development.  The undergraduate curriculum is dynamic, innovative, broadly based, and includes the option of an integrated BSE/MSE degree program for qualified candidates.  Total engineering enrollment is over 800 students.


Required Qualifications

  • A B.S. in Civil Engineering from an accredited college/university and a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering or closely related field with an emphasis in Transportation Engineering or equivalent;
  • Demonstrated ability to teach surveying and geographical information systems (GIS);
  • A commitment to developing an academic culture that is inclusive of a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff; and
  • Effective oral and written communication with a strong commitment to excellence in teaching, scholarship, and service.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Professional engineering registration in the United States;
  • Experience with computer aided design (CAD) and
  • Three (3) years of non-academic professional experience in the transportation field.
