Responsibilities

The purpose of this position is to provide immigration, cultural, and academic advising to non-degree language students, accelerator program students, and degree-seeking and exchange international students and visiting scholars on the Macon and Savannah campuses, and to work with Mercer faculty and staff as an advocate for international student and scholar needs. The coordinator serves as a Designated School Official (DSO) with the Department of Homeland Security, and an Alternate Responsible Office (ARO) for the Department of State for the purpose of issuing and maintaining visa and immigration documents and records. The coordinator is responsible for maintaining all Macon-based F-1 and J-1 visa-holding international student and scholar immigration records and advising international students and scholars on their rights and responsibilities in maintaining immigration status and complying with U.S. laws, including taxes and registration. The coordinator also assists in policy development and prepares reports related to international student activity, including but not limited to OPT, CPT, transferring or failing to maintain immigration status. Finally, the coordinator is responsible for planning, organizing, and delivering international student and scholar orientations and special activities that help international students & scholars adjust to life in the U.S., and that educate faculty, staff, and domestic students on issues related to international students and global circumstances.

Required Qualifications

Due to Federal regulations regarding the issuance of immigration documents, US citizenship or permanent residence is required.

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is required, along with two years of related experience, to include academic advising and working directly with diverse populations. A master's degree and prior experience in higher education working directly with an international student and scholar services office are desirable.  Candidates with current DSO Certification with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and/or ARO Certification with the U.S. Department of State are desirable. The ability to multi-task as well as having strong written and oral communication skills is essential. Lastly, the successful candidate will have knowledge of, or willingness to learn about, U.S. immigration regulations for
international students.
