Responsibilities

Under direct supervision of the Director, the study abroad advisor is responsible for all logistical aspects of managing the study abroad process for students seeking an independent study abroad experience. This position serves as a contact and source of information in the Mercer Abroad office for all students, faculty and staff seeking information about study abroad programs. The advisor provides outstanding advising services to students interested in studying abroad with partner universities or externally sponsored programs on credit transfer procedures, program integrity, and the overall study abroad process. The advisor liaises with study abroad advisors at hosting institutions on any issues related to Mercer students' participation, review students' choices of semester exchange and transient programs for credit transfer, and work with advisors at partner institutions to process Mercer student applications. The advisor works with various University offices, schools and departments including the Registrar, Student Financial Planning, Auxiliary Services, Academic and Advising Services, and the Bursar to ensure proper registration/enrollment at Mercer, the application of transfer credit, appropriate budgeting, and the application of study abroad fees. The advisor assists in the collection and management of all student data, participation data, interest and inquiry data and all other related data pertaining to study abroad programs, and maintains written communication with student participants while they are abroad. The advisor works collaboratively with the study abroad programs coordinator to prepare information pertaining to new programs for use in print and electronic media and supports the department’s needs in hosting and attending promotional events (including but not limited to information tables during freshmen preview days, at various academic and co-curricular fairs, the Mercer Study Abroad fair, and classroom visits).

Required Qualifications

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university is required, along with two years of directly related experience, to include academic advising.  Must be able to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences and have strong organizational skills.  Must have proficiency in Microsoft Office products in order to maintain office files and budget reports. Candidates with a background in global studies, foreign languages, international studies, cultural studies, sociology, anthropology, psychology, or other fields associated with cultural learning and human development, or marketing or graphic design in combination with extensive time abroad are desirable.
